The Daily Hero’s Journey

Forget about the bullshit books and movies. The Odyssey. Star Wars. And, it pains me to add my personal favorite: The Matrix. All of the Joseph Campbell crap.

There’s one hero’s journey that’s played out in every life. every day. It’s your personal daily hero’s journey. Doesn’t matter what you do. Every morning (or whenever), you wake up. You get ready. Or not. You step out into the world. Whatever stepping out means for you.

Once there, maybe you dig ditches and fix roads. Maybe you pick up garbage. Maybe you feed people as they come through the front door and in the drive through. Maybe you drive kids to school, so they

Maybe you sit in front of a computer in your room, and talk to people, with or without the camera on. You type stuff into files. You write code to make the computer do stuff. You write blogs or make videos to make people feel stuff.

At the end of it, you “come home”. You bring home something. Maybe it’s candy for your kid. Maybe it’s bread for your family. Maybe it’s just your tired self. You’re bruised and battered. The world nearly did you in. But you survived.

Or, the really hard stuff. You stayed home. You took care of the kids. Showed them how to be good human beings. Again. You took care of the home. You cooked breakfast. Lunch. Supper. Checked in on your mom, who frustrated the hell out of you.

You. are. a. hero. Not just to your dog (if you have one). To the world. It won’t acknowledge it. But you are. You wash your face. Take five. And then you do it all over again. Till you don’t.

There isn’t a hero’s journey out there in any book or movie that can hold a candle to you.
